Silicone Keypads FAQ: Engineering & Manufacturing
Get direct answers about silicone keypad manufacturing, tolerances, and design constraints from our engineering team.
1. Engineering & Design Specifications
Our standard actuation force ranges from 80g to 300g. For general consumer electronics, 100g–150g is typical. For industrial or automotive applications requiring tactile confirmation, we recommend 150g–250g. We control this force by adjusting the angle and thickness of the keypad webbing during molding, with a tolerance of ±10g to ±20g depending on the design.
A snap ratio between 40% and 60% provides the crispest tactile feedback without causing user fatigue. If the ratio drops below 40%, the key feels "mushy" or linear. If it exceeds 60%, the key may not return to its original position smoothly.
The webbing (the angled wall that collapses when pressed) typically ranges from 0.3mm to 0.8mm. Thinner webbings (0.3mm) yield lighter actuation forces, while thicker webbings (0.6mm+) are used for higher forces. Going below 0.3mm increases the risk of tearing during the molding and demolding process.
We offer three main types of conductive contacts:
- Carbon Pills: The most common and reliable, with a contact resistance typically under 100 Ohms.
- Conductive Ink Printing: Used for irregular contact shapes, with resistance between 50 and 200 Ohms.
- Gold Pills: Used for critical medical or aerospace applications requiring extremely low resistance (<1 Ohm).
2. Material Durability & Surface Treatment
We recommend Shore 40A to 60A for most keypad applications. Lower durometers (30A–40A) are softer and easier to actuate but may wear faster. Higher durometers (60A–70A) provide a stiffer, more robust feel suited for harsh industrial environments.
Yes. Standard silicone naturally resists UV degradation and functions reliably between -40°C and +200°C. For exposure to harsh industrial chemicals, oils, or fuels, we recommend applying a PU (Polyurethane) or Epoxy coating to seal the surface and protect the printed characters.
For standard use, we apply a Matte Coating over silkscreen printing to prevent dust accumulation and provide basic wear resistance. For high-frequency use (e.g., POS terminals, industrial controls), we highly recommend PU Coating or an Epoxy Resin Coating, which permanently protects the characters from abrasion.
For backlit keypads, we start with a translucent silicone base. We then spray multiple layers of opaque ink (usually white, then black) over the surface. Finally, we use Laser Etching to remove the top layers of ink in the shape of the characters, allowing the LED light from your PCB to shine through.
3. Manufacturing, MOQ & Lead Times
We support flexible manufacturing. While our standard MOQ for mass production is typically 1,000 to 5,000 pieces (depending on keypad size), we also support smaller pilot runs and prototyping phases to help validate your design.
- Tooling & Prototypes: 10 to 15 days after 2D/3D design approval.
- Mass Production: 15 to 25 days, depending on order volume and the complexity of surface treatments (e.g., laser etching or PU coating).
Absolutely. We strictly protect our clients' intellectual property. We are happy to sign your standard Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) or provide our own before you share any CAD files or proprietary project details.
You do. Once the tooling fee is fully paid, the custom mold is your exclusive property. We will store and maintain it in our facility for your future production runs, and we will never use it to produce keypads for other clients.
4. Shipping, Compliance & After-Sales
Yes. All our raw silicone materials and curing agents are RoHS and REACH compliant. We can also provide FDA 21 CFR 177.2600, LFGB, or USP Class VI certifications for medical and food-grade applications. If you require full assembly CE/FCC testing, we can provide the necessary material data sheets (SGS reports) to support your certification process.
- To prevent deformation and static dust accumulation during transit, we pack silicone keypads in anti-static PE bags (usually 500-1000 pcs per bag, depending on size). These bags are then placed in standard export cartons (double-wall corrugated boxes) with bubble wrap or foam boards to absorb shock. For keypads with delicate surface treatments, we use blister trays to isolate each piece.
We offer flexible shipping terms (EXW, FOB, CIF, DDP). For smaller or urgent orders (under 100kg), we recommend express air freight (DHL, FedEx, UPS), which takes 3-7 days. For larger bulk orders, we offer sea freight or train freight (20-40 days). Under DDP terms, we can handle all export and import customs clearance, duties, and taxes, delivering directly to your warehouse.
We stand by our Quality Control data. If any keypads fall outside the agreed-upon tolerances (e.g., actuation force or dimensions) specified in the approved drawings, we will either rework or replace the defective batch at our cost. We request that you provide photos and testing data within 30 days of receiving the goods.
